- πύματος
- πύματοςGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `utmost, last' (Il.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Fixed superlative without agreement outside Greek; on the formation Schwyzer KZ 63, 60. Remote connection may exist with Skt. púnar `back, again, further', ardly however with OHG fon(a) `von' (IE *pu-n-??; but OS fan(a) `id.' with orig. -o-). As IE *po (e.g. in Lat. po-situs) is considered as zero grade of *apo (= *h₂po from *h₂epo) `from, away', *pu would stand beside *apu, which is found only in Arc. Cypr. Lesb. Thess. ἀπυ and there may have arisen phonetically from ἀπο. -- Schwyzer-Debrunner 444 w. n. 3 a. further lit.; s. also πύννος; also πρυμνός. For a separate prep. pu Bechtel Lex. s. πύματος (after Bugge BB 14, 68).Page in Frisk: 2,624
